Defatted rice bran is produced after oil is extracted from rice bran. It may be considered as an ingredient in animal-feed programs, but buyers should not treat every offer as an identical commodity. Nutrient composition, residual oil, fibre, ash, particle size and storage quality can vary according to raw material, milling practice, extraction process and handling.

The right purchasing approach is to define the required specification and evaluate each supplier against a current product sheet and certificate of analysis.

1. Confirm the product identity

Terms such as rice bran, rice polishings, full-fat rice bran, defatted rice bran and deoiled rice bran are sometimes used loosely. They are not necessarily interchangeable.

The buyer should confirm:

  • Product name used by the manufacturer
  • Production process
  • Whether oil is mechanically pressed or solvent-extracted
  • Residual oil or fat level
  • Amount of rice husk or other material permitted
  • Intended feed application
  • Country and production facility of origin

A clear product description reduces the risk of comparing materials with significantly different nutritional and commercial values.

2. Define the nutritional limits

The final limits should come from the feed formulator and destination requirements—not from a generic internet listing.

Common parameters include:

  • Crude protein, minimum
  • Crude fat or ether extract, maximum or range
  • Crude fibre, maximum
  • Moisture, maximum
  • Ash, maximum
  • Metabolizable or digestible energy, when contractually relevant
  • Calcium and phosphorus, if required
  • Other formulation-specific nutrients

Published research demonstrates why supplier-specific analysis matters. Studies indexed by FAO AGRIS report different compositions for defatted rice bran depending on sample and processing. Those studies are useful background, but they should not be copied into a purchase contract as a supplier guarantee. 3. Control fibre, ash and contamination

High fibre or ash may indicate a greater proportion of husk or mineral contamination and can change the ingredient’s value in a feed formula.

The RFQ should state:

  • Maximum crude fibre
  • Maximum total ash
  • Acid-insoluble ash or sand/silica limit, when used
  • Maximum foreign matter
  • Colour and odour expectations
  • Requirement for the material to be free from visible mould, infestation and objectionable odour

The buyer should also agree on the test method. Two laboratories may report different results if they use different sampling or analytical procedures.

4. Set moisture and storage requirements

Moisture affects weight, storage stability and the risk of mould development. The buyer should specify a maximum moisture level and ask how the producer controls the product after processing.

Useful questions include:

  • How soon after production is the material packed?
  • Is it stored in a dry, covered facility?
  • How is moisture monitored?
  • Are container desiccants or liners used?
  • What is the recommended shelf life?
  • What storage conditions are required at destination?

Residual fat can also influence storage stability. The offered fat level and expected shelf life should be reviewed together.

5. Address mycotoxins and other contaminants

Testing requirements depend on origin, intended use, buyer policy and destination regulations.

The buyer may need to specify limits or testing for:

  • Aflatoxins
  • Other mycotoxins relevant to the feed program
  • Heavy metals
  • Pesticide residues
  • Salmonella or other microbiological parameters
  • Prohibited materials or adulterants

Do not request a long testing panel without checking commercial relevance, laboratory availability and the requirements of the destination. State who performs the test, which method applies and whether results at origin or destination govern acceptance.

6. Confirm physical form and handling

Physical characteristics affect mixing, unloading and storage.

Specify or request:

  • Meal, powder or pellet form
  • Particle-size range
  • Maximum fines, if relevant
  • Flow characteristics
  • Bulk density, where needed for planning
  • Caking tolerance
  • Magnet or metal-control procedures used by the producer

For feed mills, a product that meets chemical values but handles poorly may still create operational problems.

7. Choose the packing and shipment method

Possible formats may include bags, jumbo bags, containerized bulk or another producer-approved method. Availability must be confirmed with the selected supplier.

The buyer should ask for:

  • Net weight per bag
  • Bag material and inner liner
  • Palletized or non-palletized loading
  • Expected net loading per container
  • Container-liner requirement
  • Shipping marks
  • Loading photographs or report
  • Moisture-protection measures

Packing changes both product price and freight efficiency. Compare offers using the same net quantity and handling format.

8. Require representative sampling and analysis

A certificate of analysis is only as reliable as the sample and test behind it.

Agree on:

  • Whether the COA is typical, batch-specific or pre-shipment
  • Sampling location and method
  • Composite-sample procedure
  • Laboratory and analytical methods
  • Independent inspection, if required
  • Retained sample for claims
  • Acceptable tolerance
  • Action if the shipment is outside specification

For a first shipment, an independent pre-shipment inspection may help both parties establish a reliable quality baseline.

9. Include commercial and logistics details

A complete RFQ should also state:

  • Trial quantity
  • Expected monthly or annual demand
  • Destination port
  • Required Incoterm and named place
  • Target shipment period
  • Payment preference
  • Required documents
  • Import permit or registration status
  • Quotation deadline

Ask the supplier to confirm MOQ, lead time, loading quantity, price validity and available documents.
