Refined rice bran oil may be sourced from Thailand for retail distribution, food service, private-label programs or food manufacturing. A reliable import project begins by defining the sales channel and required format before requesting a price.
Bottle size, label language, carton configuration, order volume and registration documents can change the suitable producer, MOQ, lead time and cost.
1. Define the business model
Tell the supplier whether the enquiry is for:
- An existing Thai manufacturer’s brand
- The buyer’s private label
- An SPG-developed brand, where available
- Food-service containers
- Bulk supply for manufacturing or repacking
If private label is required, clarify who owns the trademark, who supplies the artwork, which party approves regulatory text and whether the manufacturer has experience with the destination country.
2. Identify the market and channel
The same oil may require different packaging and commercial support for:
- Supermarkets
- Traditional retail and wholesalers
- Hotels, restaurants and catering
- E-commerce
- Food manufacturing
- Institutional procurement
Provide the country, target consumer, price positioning and anticipated sales volume. A premium glass-bottle concept and a high-volume food-service pack are different sourcing projects.
3. Request the actual product specification
Ask for the current manufacturer specification rather than relying on marketing claims.
Relevant information may include:
- Product name and refining process
- Ingredient declaration
- Physical and chemical specification
- Fatty-acid profile, if required
- Quality parameters used by the manufacturer
- Allergen and GMO declarations, where requested
- Shelf life and storage conditions
- Nutrition information
- Certificate of analysis approach
Avoid health claims unless they are legally permitted, accurately worded and supported for the exact product and destination.
4. Confirm packaging options
Ask the producer to confirm available formats, such as:
- Retail plastic bottles
- Retail glass bottles
- Larger food-service containers
- Drums, IBCs or flexitank, if supported
For each format, request:
- Net volume
- Bottle and cap material
- Tamper-evident feature
- Units per carton
- Cartons per pallet
- Pallets or cartons per container
- Net and gross shipment weight
- Barcode responsibility
- Shelf-life coding method
Do not place packaging formats on the website until a producer has confirmed them.
5. Plan Arabic and English labelling early
Packaging should not be designed first and “translated later.” Arabic copy affects layout, line length, mandatory information and artwork approval.
For Saudi prepacked food, the SFDA states that labelling and explanatory statements must be in Arabic. If another language is used, it must appear alongside Arabic and carry identical information. Saudi importers must also register imported food items and meet applicable requirements. Review the current SFDA labelling guidance and imported-food requirements.
The buyer and importer should confirm requirements for:
- Product name
- Ingredients
- Nutrition panel
- Net content
- Country of origin
- Manufacturer and importer details
- Production and expiry coding
- Storage instructions
- Lot number
- Barcode
- Claims and certification marks
Final artwork should be reviewed before commercial printing.
6. Confirm regulatory and commercial documents
Depending on the destination and transaction, buyers may request:
- Product specification
- Certificate of analysis
- Ingredient declaration
- Nutrition information
- Certificate of origin
- Health or free-sale certificate, where required
- Manufacturer registration documents
- Halal certificate, where applicable and available
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Bill of lading
- Label artwork
- Other documents required by the licensed importer
The importer should confirm current requirements with the relevant authority before order confirmation.
7. Calculate MOQ correctly
MOQ may be determined by several factors:
- Oil production batch
- Bottle and cap procurement
- Printed label or shrink-sleeve minimum
- Carton printing
- Language version
- Number of SKUs
- Container utilization
A supplier may accept a smaller oil quantity but require a larger packaging commitment. Ask whether unused printed packaging must be purchased or stored for future orders.
8. Request both trial and recurring pricing
State:
- Trial quantity
- Expected recurring quantity
- Number of bottle sizes
- Destination port
- Required Incoterm
- Target launch date
- Label-development status
Ask the supplier to separate one-time costs, such as artwork plates, molds or registration support, from recurring unit prices.
9. Evaluate container and temperature considerations
Ask for a loading plan showing cartons, pallets, net volume and gross weight. Confirm whether the product or packaging has temperature limitations and how containers are protected during storage and transit.
The shipping plan should consider:
- Seasonal heat
- Direct sunlight during staging
- Container cleanliness and odour
- Transit time and transshipment
- Shelf life remaining on arrival
- Destination storage
10. Approve in stages
A controlled private-label process may include:
- Product and producer approval
- Specification and document review
- Packaging-format confirmation
- Commercial quotation
- Label and artwork review
- Sample or production mockup
- Regulatory confirmation by importer
- Purchase order and production
- Pre-shipment document review
Do not approve a large print run before the importer has completed the necessary label and registration review.
